Irish coffee

Irish coffee

Irish Coffee was invented when a flight was going from the USA to Ireland. After a grueling 18-hour flight the passengers were greeted with a sweetened coffee laced with whisky. A passenger asked “What kind of coffee is this?,” the response “Irish Coffee.” A tradition (and obsession) was born!

Irish Coffee

1 Cup of Hot Coffee

1 TBLS Brown Sugar

(Some people like 1 tsp white sugar and 1 tsp brown sugar)

1 Jigger Irish Whiskey (I used Jameson)

Heavy Cream

The Irish Coffee glass is used so you can see the separation of the coffee and the cream, and not burn your fingers.

Add the sugar to the coffee, the brown sugar has a molasses flavor and is richer in my opinion. Add the Irish Whiskey and stir it all together. Then it is time to top it with the cream. To help keep the cream on top it is best to use double whipped cream. Warm a spoon and carefully pour the cream on the spoon while it is held at the top of the coffee. It will look like a Guinness.

Enjoy the drink by drinking the coffee through the cream. Beautiful! But if the cream doesn’t stay on the top don’t worry. Mix it all together and enjoy. A lovely after-dinner drink. Always be responsible!

St. Patricks Day (Week)

In honor of St Patrick’s Day being on Saturday, this week’s posts will all focus on Green and the Irish.

In preparation for this post, I spent a lot of time thinking about what it means to be Irish, is “Everyone Irish” on St. Patrick’s Day; what does this all mean. Surely there is more than Leprechauns and joke about drinking! Can I say I’m Irish?

It can be confusing to people coming from another country that I might say “I’m part Irish.” Now, I wasn’t born in Ireland, in fact I’ve never even been to Ireland. But, most of us understand that what I’m really saying is that part of my family – maybe several generations back – came from Ireland. Somehow, this is different than if they were German, Polish or from any other place. Really, this other country may influence how we were raised. For example, one set of my grandparents spoke French as their first language, a lot of the things that I learned about as a child was because of that influence. So, I think that if the influence and family history is what includes me as being French or Irish, or whatever, then everyone who is influenced by the Irish can be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Did you know, there are celebrations in Japan to celebrate? Kind of cool to celebrate another country.

I am an American first, but I’ll tell you that I’m half French and the rest Irish and English. My sister even took one of those DNA tests, and the results are that we are 25% Irish.  So here we go – we will celebrate that portion this week.

If you claim no Irish Ancestry or influence, I hope you enjoy the content. I think it is perfect for Spring anyway. Enjoy this time and Holiday, but always be safe and responsible doing it!

I enjoyed looking for scarves to work with the purses. My scarf is vintage, my grandmothers, but there are beautiful ones in all price points.

The hydrangeas are in a Waterford bowl similar to the ones below. Waterford was started in Ireland, so I thought it was fitting to add it to this vignette.

Creating Family Traditions

So, besides laundry . . . one of the things I want to focus on this year is creating Family Traditions. I really like the idea of having a little more of a special dinner on Sunday nights. Everyone is so busy, but being with family for a meal, where we are focusing on one another is so important to me.

For Christmas, my son received a cook book for junior chefs. Tonight, together, we made Beef Wellington. I set a nice table and we had a lovely dinner. I hope these will make lovely memories for the kids, memories that they will pass down to their children. Memories, created that fuel them with the love and support they need during challenging times in their lives. So for this year, I’m creating family traditions. Tradition #1, Sunday dinners! Do you have any special family traditions?

Talbots Navy Sweater

Here is the 3rd of the items I bought on clearance from Talbots. At 70% off of the sale price it is $15! I love the lace detail on the sleeve. The sweater is very light and will go well into the spring. Here I have it shown with a pair of Talbots yoga leggings. They have a seam detail in the front which makes them look dressier. I sized up to a small on the sweater for a baggy fit. The cardigan on top I have shown before and I plan to change out the velvet tie with other more spring-like colors in the future. The purse and scarf keep the outfit from being to plain. I always check the sale sections for scarves!

Enjoy!

White Boyfriend Jeans

The last of the items purchased on Clearance from Talbots is a pair of white boyfriend jeans. Talbots isn’t a place I usually purchase pants from because unless there is a return from the catalogue, they don’t carry my size in the store. But, I found these boyfriend style jeans and since I want them to feel quite slouchy I opted for their size 2. The material feels nice and it has a good amount of stretch. The waist is high, but not too high. They are tight enough to stay up, but loose enough that I can pull the off without unbuttoning them. Are they too big? Yeah, probably, but they are so comfortable. The pockets are sewn on the inside with nude fabric – so they don’t show through. The quality expected from Talbots is there. Clearance out, I paid $9. For $9, I’m willing to do a little work. They are a little too pristine for my style. I am going to cut off the hems and lightly distress them. I will show the details and the “change” in an up coming post.

I hope this little series of clearance items inspires you to look at items in a different ways so that you can have a fun, functional wardrobe – at a great price! Accessories make the outfit, so whether you choose a light blouse or a chambray shirt, you can look ready for the spring!

Talbots Yellow Eyelet Tank

The next piece in this winter clearance to spring style is a yellow eyelet tank top. It’s a tank top so it is very easy to see it as a spring piece. Yellow is having a bit of a moment so I thought this would be a fun piece to use. It is great on a dreary day to fake some “sunshine!”

Talbots Eyelet Tank

I love it with white, but if you are like me, much of my like isn’t white-friendly. It is so sweet with this Elizabeth & James Lace skirt though.

I would add a statement necklace or scarf. There is a vintage clutch to the left and sandals for whatever height you feel like for the day.

One of my favorite fragrances is this YSL Babydoll perfume. It is a perfect grapefruit scent that always evokes springtime, it bright and fresh!

Enjoy

Mom Life

All my life I knew I wanted to be a mom. I am blessed to have that dream a reality. Today, I am supposed to have a nice article with beautiful photos to add to my blog. The reality is that life didn’t make it to being picture perfect today. It was a good day, nothing negative to report. I took a shower, got dressed in jeans and my favorite gray sweatshirt. The kids were good, healthy, and productive.

I planned out my blog posts for next week – I even ordered clothes and did some research. Productive, good. So, today, lets celebrate normal days – maybe not picture perfect – but we are happy to have them.

Tiny Talbots Clearance – Pink and Orange Turtleneck.

This week I am going to share 4 clearance pieces from Talbots. They are about 80% off their original retail price. First you will see a pink and orange turtleneck. Because of the pink it is very easy to transition into the spring.

First I paired it with a pair of pink jeans I already had in my closet. The jeans were from Talbots a few ago and they match nicely. I think a white or blue pair look equally nice. This top has a very nice structure, and a zipper at the back. I sized up to a small because I liked the extra space because it felt more casual to me.

As you can see from the second photo, it looks nice with white shorts, wedges and a matching bag. The details contribute to the feeling of spring, whether it is the sandals or the wicker bag, these outfits call for spring and are easy on the budget!! Another think you will see a lot of are scarves. I think they are so great for bringing any outfit together and provide warmth on a cooler day or when the air-conditioning is too cool!

Enjoy!

Garden Planning

Today I stopped at the local nursery and picked up some pansies and Sedum. I am going to start creating a spring front porch. I know when the pansies arrive that Spring is on its way.

Also, I spent quite a lot of time choosing the seeds I want to plant and start for both the vegetable and flower gardens. It is a big list. Not wanting to bite off too much, the editing process will begin tomorrow. Would you be interested in seeing a copy of the list I made?

My instagram feed shows a picture of the pansies. I will update are the front porch comes along.
